Album Review: BJ The Chicago Kid - In My Mind

"He comes into his own when he's fully inhabiting the role of soul crooner."

In My Mind is the first major label release from R&B/soul singer BJ The Chicago Kid, and given his past collaborations, various A-list rappers again make an appearance here.

While the songs tailored to suit them are pleasant (and probably a commercial necessity at this point), BJ is more than capable of being the centre of attention. He comes into his own when he's fully inhabiting the role of soul crooner — as on the beautifully minimal Shine, as well as Woman's World, a gender-reversed take on The Godfather Of Soul's 1966 hit — all while giving us those homespun truths most trendy R&B singers are too cool for.
