In Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, Eddy and Patsy are up to all their old tricks. If you're a fan of the original sitcom you'll love it - all the old characters feature, from Jennifer Saunders' rambunctious publicist Edina to Joanna Lumley's vulgar magazine editor Patsy. Saunders is back at the writers desk and the inevitable hijinks ensue, this time gathering momentum when, at a fashion event, Eddy accidentally bumps Kate Moss off a balcony into the Thames.
Jon Hamm's cameo, along with the host of many many others (60 in total, including any number of fashion figures), from Kate Moss to Dawn French, co-writer of the sketch from which the sitcom sprang, provides easy laughs - Hamm is the object of Patsy's affections, emerging at the climactic moment with her lipstick all over his face. From here the plot remains a little flimsy - Eddy and Patsy flee to Cannes as a media storm picks up: Moss is presumed dead, and Eddy and Patsy say goodbye to their careers and champagne-soaked, high-flying lifestyles, at least for the time being.
Of course everything is resolved in the end - no thanks to Eddy and Patsy. Still we have plenty of "sweetie darlings" to pull us through, the charm of Saunders and Lumley, and the earnest place of homage from which the film grows giving Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie a sense of warmth. A tribute to the original series. Absolutely fabulous!
