2 Brown Sugars

"Uncomfortable."

In 2 Brown Sugars, two men, one from Bali the other from Kenya, share their cross-cultural experiences of adjusting to Australian life.

The former, Vincent Shaka, kicks off the show. Ultimately, his jokes involve himself and his culture acting as the punchline; it’s uncomfortable. Wayan Keenan fares slightly better, his shtick shrugging off casual racism by gently (and not so gently) berating bigots for their stupidity. At times his satire blurs the line, venturing into ‘it feels wrong to laugh at this’ territory. His best material mines his personal experiences, such as being extremely inept at dirty talking.
