Yothu Yindi To Play 2013 NIMAs

The National Indigenous Music Awards are once again set to take over Darwin this August and this year they will feature a big celebration of the music of what is perhaps Australia's most legendary indigenous bands, the great Yothu Yindi.

The majority of the artists performing at the event will be announced in mid-June, but today the festival has revealed that the original members of the original Yothu Yindi line up will be performing on the night of the awards. Filling in for the great Mandawuy Yunupingu will be a selection of some of the finest indigenous voices in music today, including his grandson – and lead singer of East Journey - Rrawun Maymuru and soulful Melbourne singer Kutcha Edwards, with plenty more to be named.

A host of great artists will cover some of their favourite Yothu Yindi songs and the bill promises to feature a wide array of both well established and up and coming indigenous artists.

For the real burgeoning talents, from today artists are able to apply to be a part of the triple j Unearthed competition to win a slot at the awards, the slot that was last year won by Thelma Plum in its inaugural year.

The ceremony and concert take place at the Darwin Ampitheatre on Saturday 10 August; tickets are available now through the Darwin Festival website.
