Khaleesi only turns the other cheek to open another can of whoop-ass

Things are about to heat up in a big way in the world of HBO's runaway fantasy hit Game Of Thrones, with the newest trailer for the show's impending fifth season making its way onto the internet and flooring nerds with fits of excitement today.

The trailer opens with an ominous voice-over from the Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains herself, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), who, five seasons in, is clearly becoming hell-bent on reclaiming the hotly disputed Iron Throne, dismissing the would-be dynasties who dare to sit on it with cold disdain:

"Lannister. Baratheon. Stark. Tyrell. They're all just spokes on a wheel," Dany says. "This one's on top, then that one's on top, and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground.

"I'm not going to stop the wheel — I'm going to break the wheel."

And then we see exactly how she plans to do that, and — trust us — it's basically the move for which you have been patiently waiting for the past four seasons.

Excited? You should be. Without delving into too much detail and possibly spoiling some of the surprises therein, let's just say that it looks as though the wider threats bearing down upon King's Landing will pretty swiftly dwarf the blood-soaked game of Familial Musical Chairs in which the central families have been engaged for the past four seasons, though those machinations are still in play, with nods to jilted Baratheon sibling Stannis' plans to take the Stark-controlled North and perennially sad-faced hero Jon Snow's attempts to unite with the snow-dwelling Wildlings lest they all fall to the encroaching army of White Walkers. Naturally, evergreen fan-favourites (and outcasts) Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) also make the cut. It's going to be a ride, folks.

Check it out below.

Game Of Thrones season five is set to start screening on Foxtel on 12 April.
