More Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac

That wasn’t Fleetwood Mac you heard blasting out of triple j this morning, it was Adelaide pop-rockers The Tullamarines.

Today, triple j shared the identity of the latest act to enter the ABC studios and take on Like A Version. The Tullamarines covered the Fleetwood Mac classic, The Chain – admittedly a song that gets covered a lot, and not always very well – and smashed it outta the park.

Like the original song, the Aussie group traded harmonies as they showcased its many dynamics. And, again, like the track we know and love, The Tullamarines spotlighted the bass-driven breakdown, leading to a full-blown closing jam. Check out the cover below.

In an interview with triple j, vocalist Angus Purvis and co-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lucinda Machin opened up about the song choice.

“We had a lot of songs that we were thinking about. The Chain came up as an option, and we were very, very scared,” Purvis admitted. Referring to the rest of the band, Purvis continued, “And they were thinking we couldn’t do that justice.”

But, ultimately, the band decided to “give it a go, see what happens,” Machin shared.

Machin described the lyrical themes and the song’s construction as “very angsty,” while Purvis remarked that The Chain is a song that feels like it’s been around “forever.”

Below, you can find the full interview, as well as The Tullamarines’ rendition of The Chain and a version of their song, Running On Empty.

Last month, The Tullamarines were announced as a nominated act at this year’s AIR Awards. Their 2025 sophomore EP, Safety Blanket, has been nominated for Best Independent Pop Album or EP. The winners will be revealed during an invite-only ceremony at Adelaide Town Hall on Thursday, 30 July.

They took the EP on the road last October, following a massive 12 months that included sold-out shows, festival appearances, and gaining full triple j rotation.
