More Conor Oberst Conor Oberst

It's been a week of vindication for Omaha-bred indie/folk troubadour Conor Oberst.

A matter of days ago, the Bright Eyes/Monsters Of Folk/Desaparecidos frontman accepted an apology and retraction from Joanie Fairchild, the woman who had previously accused him of raping her in 2003 (though his suit against her remains in effect at this time).

And overnight, following the dystopian, noirish overtones of the video for previous release Zigzagging Toward The Light, Oberst unveiled the really very sweet, moving, strangely sad and — aptly — innocent clip for You Are Your Mother's Child, his newest single off recently released LP Upside Down Mountain.

The track treads the sort of believably emotional, lyrically affecting ground so well navigated by previous man-and-minimalism heart-wrenchers like First Day Of My Life (off I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning) or No Lies, Just Love, from Oberst's split with then-active Saddle Creek labelmates Son, Ambulance, back in 2001, and should be a pleasant surprise for anyone who might have fallen off the bandwagon in light of his mid-2000s shift towards an overtly countrified aesthetic.
