Watch Sufjan Stevens' Horrifying New Video For A 13-Year-Old Song

You can't make someone wait this long and then just freak them out, Sufjan

Back in 2001, well before he was known for being the angel wing-wearing, orchestrally inclined mad-scientist composer behind such seminal works as state-based symphonic LPs Michigan and Illinois, indie-folk luminary Sufjan Stevens was all up in electronic music's business, dropping his oft-overlooked sophomore effort, Enjoy Your Rabbit, in September that year.

Now, to celebrate that album's long-awaited release on vinyl, Stevens and the folks at Asthmatic Kitty Records have unveiled at long last an animated video clip to accompany album track Year Of The Tiger, and it's... kind of unsettling.

On the one hand, there are some really trippy transitions and movements, and there is a hypnotic pleasure in watching the slowly shifting shapes and textures while the sedate track pulses along in the background - but on the other hand, there are tiger-people wearing lipstick, so it doesn't exactly "invite" a sense of calm.

Check it out for yourself below, since it's not like Sufjan appears to be releasing another entry in his long-abandoned "50 States" project any time soon - although he did pop up in pleasing fashion earlier this year on Sisyphus, his excellent alt hip-hop collaboration with Son Lux and Serengeti. The talented jerk.
