17-year-old Mol Turner from Wollongong brought what will most likely be the most shocking Blind Audition to this year’s season of The Voice Australia last night (26 August).
Mol Turner, not just a vocalist, is also the drummer in the Wollongong band Clueless.
The first-ever extreme metal vocalist to make a mark on the Aussie version of the singing competition – The Voice in countries including Bulgaria, Mongolia, France, and Germany has frequently featured metal singers – Turner didn’t just bring metal to the stage; she did it while covering a pop classic: Britney Spears’ Toxic.
As she switched from singing to screaming, the surprise on all four coaches’ faces was clear to see – Adam Lambert was headbanging, LeAnn Rimes nearly jumped out of her chair, Guy Sebastian was in shock, and Kate Miller-Heidke was vibing after the initial surprise wore off.
While Turner displayed an impressive vocal technique that sounded clear and healthy, her audition certainly wasn’t for everyone, with just Miller-Heidke turning her chair at the end of the performance.

Giving Turner feedback, Miller-Heidke cited the longstanding similarities between opera – where she was first trained – and metal, bringing up the divisiveness, drama and raw emotion required to make both genres work.
Following her audition, Turner took to Instagram to share the video you can check out below and wrote, “made fucking history last night as the first ever extreme metal vocalist on @thevoiceau!!”
Adding that she originally applied “as a joke” with the belief that her vocals would never be considered “talented enough” to make it on The Voice, Turner expressed gratitude for where metal and hardcore have brought her.
“As someone who started screaming alone in my garage after listening to ‘The Cleansing’ [by Suicide Silence] & ‘IOWA’ [Slipknot] a few too many times, I can’t believe it has landed me where it has,” Turner wrote.
“Metal & HXC have defined who I am & in a lot of ways saved my life throughout the past 7 years. This music means absolutely everything to me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Turner then addressed those who described her performance as “satanic” and “talentless” by calling to Amyl And The Sniffers’ Amy Taylor for an expletive-laden response: “As Amy Taylor says FUCK. EVERY. C**T.”
“I don’t care what you think. I do what I do for the people who understand it,” she said. “THOSE are my people, and THOSE are the people I’m here to represent. 🖤🖤
“I cannot express enough how grateful I am for everyone who tuned in and showed their support, it means so fucking much to me. THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU!!”
