WAM Looking To Save Lives With New Initiative

17 November 2016 | 2:46 pm | Staff Writer

“Nearly everyone I’ve spoken to about road safety in the Wheatbelt unfortunately has a personal story to tell of life impact and loss through a motor vehicle accident."

The influence and value of WA music body WAM has been on full display in recent weeks as another massive WAMFest unfolded, and now the champions of local music have set their sights on a different mission with the Wheatbelt WAMBassadors project.

Each year, WAM spreads local music across the state – reaching remote areas – through a number of touring initiatives, once of which being the Wheatbelt Touring Circuit that is now championing road safety messages with a number of local musicians in tow.

Having directly affected by road tragedies in the area, Erin Pope, Ash Nardini, Hayden Sprigg, Polly Medlen, Jayden Crook and Pete Byfield have joined forces to spread the message of road safety in a powerful new video that shares personal experiences.

Between 2004 and 2013, the number of people in a fatal or serious crash on Wheatbelt roads tallied 2,155, and 2016 has already seen more fatal crashes than last year.

“Nearly everyone I’ve spoken to about road safety in the Wheatbelt unfortunately has a personal story to tell of life impact and loss through a motor vehicle accident,” WAM Regional Officer Nigel Bird said.

“As people in the community come together to enjoy live music, the WAMbassadors, who are Wheatbelt locals, can engage with their peers and draw attention to the consequences of poor choices behind the wheel,” WAM CEO Mike Harris added.

The Wheatbelt Touring Circuit will visit Dobbyn Park, Jurien Bay this Friday, Nov 18, The Tivoli Room, Merredin on Saturday and Quindanning Inne on Sunday.
