VEVO Developing App For Apple TV

9 August 2013 | 2:02 pm | Staff Writer

Could this see cable networks take a hit?

Reports have begun circulating this morning that VEVO are in the midst of developing an app for the popular Apple TV set top box. AdAge broke the story, claiming their information has come from “people familiar with the matter”, and All Things D confirmed the news, saying that the app will be released as soon as Apple approves it.

The music video streaming service presently offers an ad supported streaming service online for US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Poland and Brazil and a number of apps on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Kindle Fire, Google TV, Boxee, Roku and Xbox 360.

In March of this year the (also ad supported) VEVO TV service launched in the United States and Canada, an internet TV channel that plays hour long blocks of specific genre based content and shows profiling the most watched content across the platform. It is believed the service will expand to other countries before long.

Edging into the living rooms of Apple TV users (well over 13 million of the devices have been sold to date) could see VEVO deal a serious blow to cable television music channels and increase their audience substantially. This, of course, would make them a far more alluring prospect for potential advertisers, which presently includes big clients such as McDonalds and insurance company State Farm.
