Triple M has revealed the complete list of the publicly voted Oztober 300.
The station's listeners participated in a month-long celebration of Australian rock music that highlighted the songs that formed our music history.
The Icehouse classic, Great Southern Land, was dubbed "the Aussiest rock song," according to Triple M Club members and sits pretty at #1 on the Oztober list.
Further down the list, it's clear that there are no surprises - anyone familiar with Triple M hears AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Diesel, Powderfinger, Silverchair, Noiseworks, Australian Crawl, Midnight Oil, Jet, INXS, Jimmy Barnes, Hoodoo Gurus, Choirboys, Men At Work, and Thirsty Merc on a daily basis.
There's no actual genre beyond classic rock on this list. There's certainly no metal, only a sprinkling of grunge, and the most current song is possibly Vance Joy's We're Going Home.
The songs that feature women are Goanna with Solid Rock (#29) and Razor's Edge (#104), Gotye and Kimbra's hit, Somebody That I Used To Know at #26, four appearances by the Divinyls, Torn by Natalie Imbruglia at #67, three Baby Animals showings, Kylie Minogue's Spinning Around at #83, Sheppard with Geronimo and Coming Home, The Go-Betweens at #227, Buses And Trains by Bachelor Girl at #124, Killing Heidi with Weir and Mascara, Kate Ceberano's Bedroom Eyes at #136, Big Pig at #184 and #234, Deborah Conway at #196, Kasey Chambers' Not Pretty Enough at #264, Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls at #274, Superjesus at #276, and Eurogliders at #279.
No women in the top 20 is disappointing, and hearing one woman between 15-20 songs by all men is exhausting. Not an indictment on Triple M fans, but perhaps on the station itself. There's no doubt that Triple M champions Australian music, but there's still a way to go.
