Representing the Australian women’s soccer team, the Matilda’s, Tones And I has been announced as a performer for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Closing Ceremony.
Sharing the news on social media yesterday (15 August), Tones And I posted a photo of herself with the Tillies, a press picture, and a slick shot of herself dressed all in black.
“I can finally tell you, after months of work.. I AM PERFORMING AT THE FIFA Women's World Cup CLOSING CEREMONY AHEAD OF THE FINAL ON SUNDAY,” Tones And I wrote. “CARN THE TILLIES 💚💛 #FIFAWWC #BeyondGreatness”.
Tones And I will perform her latest track, The Greatest, which was released in partnership with Football Australia. “Joining forces with the CommBank Matildas is a dream come true,” she said in a press release. “This incredible team is a source of true inspiration for me and so many other Australians. Music has the power to bring people together, and football does the same.”
Tonight is the second semi-final of the Women’s World Cup, where either Australia or England will meet last night’s semi-final winners, Spain, at the final on Sunday night.
Earlier this week, The Music reported on the Matilda’s unexpected hype song after vice-captain Steph Catley revealed her all-time favourite pre-game track, which is Strawberry Kisses by former child music star Nikki Webster.

“It’s a banger of a song,” Catley said in a recent Matilda’s social media video, per the Sydney Morning Herald.
“It’s iconic. I had it as a CD in my Walkman. It was a single, and I just listened to it over and over again, so it reminds me of my childhood. It’s happiness in a song, and it just gets me going on my day. Do you not like Strawberry Kisses? Well, I don’t like you.”
Other songs that make Matilda’s pre-game playlist include Unstoppable by Sia, 5, 6, 7, 8 by Steps, Shania Twain’s Man! I Feel Like A Woman, Afrobeats tune Rush by Ayra Starr and many more.
The Matilda’s match against the England women’s soccer team is tonight at 8 pm AEST on free-to-air television via Channel 7 and 7plus.
