In a groundbreaking move, TikTok has officially launched its premium-only "social music streaming service" in Indonesia and Brazil, with users currently able to give the new feature a go with a one-month free trial.

In a move that sees TikTok take on streaming giants Spotify and Apple Music with its latest offering, the popular video-sharing platform will allow users in both countries to download music licensed by the catalogues of all three major record companies, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music from September 5th.

As per Variety, the app "will allow users to synch with their existing accounts and also share and download the tracks they discover on TikTok."

It will also replace the company’s existing streaming service, Resso, instead aiming to offer “a high-quality listening experience while increasing opportunities and revenue for artists and rightsholders”.

According to TikTok, Resso users will be able transfer their accounts to the new app “with the click of a button”, with  Music Business Worldwide saying that the Resso app will continue to operate in India beyond the September 5 date.

Ole Obermann, the Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok, described the new app as "a new kind of service that combines the power of music discovery on TikTok with a best-in-class streaming service."

While the service is currently not available in other countries (including Down Under), many are hoping the new feature will be implemented across the globe in the coming months, though TikTok remained tight-lipped on any further info.

Asked about TikTok Music’s roll-out plans beyond Brazil and Indonesia, TikTok told Music Business Worldwide, “we are excited about the opportunities for TikTok Music, for music fans, artists and the industry, but we don’t have anything to share on future plans”.

So stay tuned, we guess!
