This Week's Releases

28 July 2016 | 3:59 pm | Staff Writer

Hellions - Opera Oblivia (UNFD)

Sydney post-hardcore outfit Hellions never cease to impress, so it’s no surprising they’ve gone out all guns blazing with their most elaborate album to date, Opera Oblivia, which unfolds in a truly engaging way and scored our Album Of The Week. It’s a release that, according to the band, celebrates and explores "everything that makes being alive worthwhile", and our reviewer said it’s “sonically spot on” and “scratches the right emotional spots”. We gave it four-and-a-half stars.

Descendents - Hypercaffium Spazzinate (Epitaph/Warner)

They may be living in separate corners of the US, but punk icons Descendents are as tight and catchy as ever with their first album in 12 years, Hypercaffium Spazzinate. It delivers 16 tunes that “seamlessly meld into the band's incredible back catalogue” while still packing a unique punch. We gave it four stars.

Totally Unicorn - Dream Life (Inertia)

The debut LP from Sydney punks Totally Unicorn is a complex beast to analyse, but it’s clear the 11-track effort is “outstanding”. Much like their hectic live show, it’s a “rollercoaster ride” that “leaves you incredulous, even after five back to back listens.” They mash math, metal, grindcore, beatdown, doom, punk, prog and thrash and it works perfectly. We gave it four stars.
