This Week's Releases

6 October 2016 | 3:15 pm | Staff Writer

Green Day, Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen, Placebo, Tiny Little Houses and more

DD Dumbo — Utopia Defeated (Liberation)

Utopia Defeated features an "eccentric and kinetic sound" and the producer/engineer Fabian Prynn worked on end "to capture the many layers that goes into a DD Dumbo song." Their vocal style "remains captivating" whilst going through "territory of Ezra Koenig, Chet Faker or even Sting". Overall the album's unorthodox concepts give the impression that Perry "is not content to deliver a straight-up pop record". We gave it four-and-a-half stars and Album Of The Week.

Green Day — Revolution Radio (Reprise/Warner)

Revolution Radio is said to "seeks to grapple with the culture of violence in the US" and has delivered some of the "vintage jokey-cynical Green Day" but "anyone hoping for a late-career classic is bound to be disappointed". The release is nevertheless "solid and concise", compared to the other later career releases by the band, who are dabbling in a genre which lives off "youthful cynicism and exuberance". We gave it two-and-a-half stars.

Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen — Death's Dateless Night (Gawdaggie/Universal)

A shared bereavement brought two "Australian rock veterans" together to record a collection of songs they play at funerals of friends, described as "a sombre affair without being mired in sadness". Kelly's daughters "Maddy and Memphis adding a welcome feminine touch" and on the whole the album is "a beautiful way to contemplate our inevitable demise". We gave it four stars.
