This Week's Releases

Temples, Kingswood, Methyl Ethel, Ed Sheeran, All Our Exes Live In Texas and more

Temples — Volcano (Heavenly Recordings/[PIAS] Australia)

Between albums, Temples have "[grown] and [matured]", Volcano resulting in "a blinding epic of cosmic disco and cosmic rock all filtered through the retro, rose-coloured glasses of the '60s and '70s". Songs like Roman Godlike Man feel like "glam in outer space", and the album is "a lush profusion of psychedelic pop dreaminess". We gave it four-and-a-half stars and our Album Of The Week.

Kingswood — After Hours, Close To Dawn (Dew Process/Universal)

Kingswood's new album is "radically different". It takes until track seven Like Your Mother to receive their "traditional kick-arse blues rock sound", with the band taking on country/bluegrass, "breezy '60s/'70s west coast" vibes and honky-tonk instead. Our words of wisdom: "open your mind about as wide as it can go before you put it on, and prepare for something very, very different." We gave it three-and-a-half stars.

Methyl Ethel Everything Is Forgotten (Dot Dash)

On Everything Is Forgotten, "surrealism and absurdist concepts co-exist with '80s synths, polyrhythmic flourishes and Webb's slippery falsetto". It's "shimmery — sometimes sinewy, often dazed" stuff, which ventures into glam-rock and distorted alien soundscapes sometimes. We gave it three-and-a-half stars.
