This Week's Releases

Big Scary, Felix Riebl, Ceres, Izzy Bizu and more

Big Scary — Animal (Pieeater/Inertia)

Animal is "a triumph from start to finish", filled with surprises and "all of them good". Double Darkness is a highlight — "Iansek appears to have borrowed a few moves from Jack White's playbook" here — while Flutism and Breathe Underwater are beautiful for the way they juxtapose each other. Our reviewer thinks its "one of [the] best contemporary indie records produced this side of the equator". We gave it four-and-a-half stars and our Album Of The Week.

Felix Riebl — Paper Doors (My Shore Productions/Kobalt)

Riebl has dialled back the "wisecracking lyrics and frenetic energy" of The Cat Empire here, making the record a more "ethereal and expansive" affair. Featuring duets with Katy Steele, Emily Lubitz and Martha Wainwright, it's clear Riebl "draws from a very broad cross-section of musical influences". We gave it three stars.

Angel Olsen — MY WOMAN (Jagjaguwar/Inertia)

Divided in two halfs — perfect for vinyl listening — MY WOMAN is "a simply gorgeous" collection of tracks. The first half "[draws] on the swagger of Polly Jean Harvey or Jenny Lewis when required" while the second becomes more "introspective". The album gives us a illusion that "you're sneaking a peek behind the curtain at an artist in turmoil". We gave it four-and-a-half stars.
