"Forgive me if I'm rusty tonight." Nice bluff, Ed.
It was hard to know what to expect last night as the packed-out Sydney Opera House eagerly awaited for Ed Sheeran to hit the stage for Nova's Red Room.
After taking a solid year off from basically doing anything, we wondered if it would take long for the UK songwriter to warm up.
Within seconds of him hitting the stage, coyly taking in the ear-piercing reception and breaking straight into new single, Castle On The Hill, we realised… nope. No warm up is required here.
Here are the biggest talking points from last night's unforgettable show.

"Forgive me if I'm rusty tonight." Nice bluff, Ed.
Forget the fact that he physically looks better than ever (cardio pays off, people), the 25-year-old busted and bounced around centre stage like it was just any other night. Openly admitting to the audience that this was his "first proper concert in over a year", you'd assume that even working the loop pedals might take some time. You'd assume wrong. And his vocals? Sublime. Sheeran REALLY showed off his chops a number of times throughout, especially in the mash-up of I See Fire and Feeling Good.
Not only was this the biggest Nova Red Room gig, but there were points during the show where we completely missed what Sheeran was even saying due to the squeals from the frenzied crowd. There was not one break in the entire show where you wouldn't have heard someone yell out like they were having some sort of private screaming match. "You're a legend, Ed!" "I love you Ed, SERIOUSLY!" "What about Chrissie Swan!?" (Um, OK)
And the standard response you'd get from Sheeran? "Cheers, mate".
It's been well publicised that playing the iconic Opera House has been a long-time dream for Sheeran and he revealed to the crowd that the dream all started when he saw a TV concert of Australia's own Missy Higgins performing at the venue.
"I said, 'when I grow up, I'd love to play there.'"
Mission accomplished — did someone say, "duet"?
How do we say this delicately? When a large amount of the audience are easily in their teens, one would find it tough to silence an entire room, given the conditions (see above). But Sheeran did just that during his performances of Tenerife Sea and Kiss Me, which by the way he mentioned were not originally in the set list. You could hear a pin drop as Sheeran belted out the tracks; a truly magical moment for both us and him.
Given that his new album is due out next month and the fact he is in the country on a promotional tour, you would think that we would hear something off the upcoming LP that we haven't yet heard. But apart from Castle On The Hill and Shape Of You this set was full of his greatest hits (Is it too early in his career for that?)
His breakout song, The A Team, was second on the list, while Lego House, Thinking Out Loud, Give Me Love and Sing all got a run as well.
After thanking the crowd for "coming out and making one of my dreams come true", Sheeran closed the show after well over an hour with You Need Me, I Don't Need You and departed the stage to a standing ovation.
We were informed that this was the second longest Nova Red Room performance in history.
Who does that title belong to? Yep — Ed Sheeran at Bondi Beach back in 2012.
He is that good.
