The QUBE Effect Has Opened Applications For 2017 Youth Week Program

8 February 2017 | 3:01 pm | Staff Writer

Aspirant artists have just over a week to get their submission together

Annual youth music program The QUBE Effect is back, bigger and better than ever, in 2017, returning to Brisbane with its eyes set on showcasing the best and brightest in Queensland music during this year's Youth Week celebrations.

The application process for this year's event is already under way, but aspirant artists still have just over a week to get their submission together for a shot at one of 24 spots to be shared among successful bands, soloists and duos.

The end goal is a chance at recording a film clip during Youth Week itself, which runs from Friday 31 March to Sunday 9 April. This is no filmed-on-an-iPhone amateur hour, either; successful acts will shoot their clip using a "cutting-edge robotic camera system", or in 360-degree video, and will not only score prizes and professional development opportunities but also the chance to perform at this year's BIGSOUND showcase series.

It's definitely not an opportunity to be sneezed at, with last year's winners including the likes of MKO Sun, Omegachild, Graham Moes and dual category winner Francesca de Valance, who took out both the People's Choice Award and Council's City Hall Concert Performance Prize.

The competition is open to acts of all genres and sizes, featuring a majority of members aged between 12 and 25. Entering is simple; just head to the Brisbane City Council website's registration page, and make sure you have the relevant materials on hand, including an artist photograph, an electronic file of your nominated song, and — if you're under 18 — a signed letter of consent from your parent or guardian.

Along with the prizes and other opportunities, the 24 successful acts will perform at a free concert on Saturday 1 April in King George Square. Line-up details are contingent on the competition, naturally.

Applications for the 2017 QUBE Effect program close at 5pm on Friday 17 February, so best get submitting.
