The Flaming Lips have confirmed they’ll be heading Down Under next year, announcing over the weekend that they have a suite of dates right around the corner.

The itinerary itself is yet to be announced, however the band wrote in a social media post that information on dates and venues would be shared in due time, with a mailing list being opened to notify fans when the news arrives – you can sign up to that list here.

The upcoming tour will mark The Flaming Lips’ first on Australian shores since 2019, when they did a five-date run along the east coast to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin. 2019 also saw the band release their 15th studio album, King’s Mouth, which was followed in 2020 by American Head.

The Flaming Lips’ last release was Where The Viaduct Looms, a nine-track effort that saw them cover songs by Nick Cave. The LP was a collaborative effort with Canadian musician Nell Smith, who at the time of its recording was just 13 years old.

Reviewing the band’s Brisbane (Meanjin) show in 2019, Madison Thomas wrote for The Music: “The visuals are mouth-wateringly Instagrammable, but the sound is teeth-shatteringly tinny. [Wayne] Coyne’s vocals struggle to be heard over the uneven mix, and when they do surface they’re croaky (and not in the usual good way). However, the band do succeed in giving the room a warm vibe, with punters reaching for balloons and tossing confetti with a childlike abandon.”
