The Cloud Maker, a new music collective creating music about culture and traditions, have returned with their latest single ahead of their upcoming regional tour.

The Cloud Maker’s beginnings can be traced back to the snowy peaks of Canada, where group members Te Kahureremoa Taumata, Sunny Kim, and Aviva Endean met during a residency at The Banff Centre in 2019.

At the end of January, The Music shared a video premiere for the group’s first-ever single, The Godly River, a song that channels ancient tales of fierce battles, summons shaman dances, and journeys to the afterlife.

The dynamic group have released their second single, Shaman Dance, today ahead of their first show on their regional Australian tour.

Where The Godly River touched on the new track’s title, Shaman Dance explores the ancient art of shamanic rituals while paying tribute to Princess Bari, the patron goddess of the afterlife, who is worshipped by Korean shamans.

It’s a mesmerising track with witchy vibes that pulls from mystical traditions and transformation, embracing the otherworldly with folk, world, and experimental music at its core.

Shaman Dance blends Māori language vocals by Te Kahureremoa Taumata, piano and clarinet played by Aviva Endean, Freya Schack-Arnott on cello, Maria Moles on drums, and Sunny Kim’s entrancing vocalisations.

The new single arrives ahead of the collective’s debut self-titled album, set for release on Friday, 28 February, via Skinnyfish Music. The group are also touring throughout this month and March; below are their upcoming tour dates.
