New music collective The Cloud Maker are preparing to release their debut album via Skinnyfish Music. Before they do, they’ve launched the music video for their moving track, The Godly River, exclusively premiering on The Music today.
The Cloud Maker’s Te Kahureremoa Taumata (Voice/Taonga Pūoro- Maori Singing Treasures) was in charge of the Maori language lyrics and vocals and performed the song with bandmates Aviva Endean (Bass clarinet, Harmonic flutes and electronics), Sunny Kim (Voice), Maria Moles (Drums), and Freya Schack-Arnott (Cello/Nyckelharpa- Nordic fiddle), the video for The Godly River is all about highlighting cultural traditions and capturing the beauty of them.
Sunny Kim sings in front of a black background, with her bandmates playing instruments and shining in their own right. “This song was written to honour and celebrate the tides of new sacred blood. It is a remembering of our connection to the moon whose cycles we sync with,” the group said.
“It is a celebration for the womb - Te whare tāngata - the house of the people. This song is a gentle friend telling you to come rest with them as you flow.”
You can watch the video below.
In their beautiful new song, The Cloud Maker channel ancient tales of fierce battles, summon shaman dances, and journey to the afterlife. The Godly River arrives ahead of the group’s debut self-titled album, which will be released on Friday, 28 February, via Skinnyfish Music.
