The musical version of 1992 movie starring Whitney Houston opens in Sydney next April.
Good news Whitney Houston fans: The Bodyguard – The Musical is headed for Sydney next April before going on a nationwide tour.
Major Australian musical theatre producer John Frost has partnered with UK producers David Ian and Michael Harrison to deliver the Australian premiere of the 2012 musical adaptation of the 1992 blockbuster starring Whitney Houston as pop superstar Rachel Marron and Kevin Costner as her titular secutiry.
The musical has all the hits from the original soundtrack, including Queen Of The Night, I Have Nothing, and of course, the Whitney version of Dolly Parton’s gut-wrenching power ballade (complete with that key change) I Will Always Love You. There are also plenty of new songs to fall in love with by Alexander Dinelaris. The show premiered on London’s West End to largely positive reviews, so expect it to play to pack houses during its Aussie season.
The premiere production in London was headlined by Grammy and Tony Award winner Heather Headley. So far, no casting details for the Australian production have been announced, but needless to say, whoever steps up to take on the role of Marron will need quite a set of pipes on them: Houston comparisons are inevitable.
