As the Melbourne community radio station Triple R gears up for its 50th anniversary celebrations, The Avalanches have joined the fold for a one-off performance.

The Avalanches – currently comprised of Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and Midnight Juggernauts’ Andy Szekeres – formed in Melbourne in 1997. To help celebrate the radio station’s 50th anniversary, the trio will perform an exclusive DJ set for subscribers in the Triple R Performance Apace on Monday, 7 September, from 6 pm.

Set to be hosted by Breaking and Entering’s Lauren Taylor, the show marks one of the group’s only live performances of the year. They’ll preview songs from their forthcoming album, No Bad Memories, scheduled for release on Friday, 16 October.

The performance won’t be broadcast on the radio; the only way fans can attend this rare and exclusive event is by subscribing to Triple R. Subscribers can visit the Triple R website to enter a giveaway for a double pass. More information is available here.

Since its establishment in 1976, Triple R has operated as a not-for-profit, independent, community radio station. It runs on the passion and dedication of hundreds of volunteers, alongside a small team of staff, as well as the generosity of subscribers, donors, and sponsors who keep the station funded and active.

Other 50th anniversary celebrations announced so far include a performance from Hong Kong-Australian interdisciplinary artist Rainbow Chan this Friday (28 August) and a special edition of Eat It, live in-conversation with Cam Smith at Triple R on Sunday, 30 August.

With their forthcoming album, No Bad Memories, The Avalanches are revisiting “imagery and jingles from childhood” and utilising these profound pieces of nostalgic sounds as a protest against the corporate framework to deliver their “own kind of joyous pop music.”

Thus far, the trio have released the singles Together (featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss), Every Single Weekend (featuring Jamie xx), Blue Shadows (featuring Karen O), and Can't Get Over Losing You (featuring Portraits of Tracy). You can pre-order/pre-save the album here.
