Tay Tay Follows Maroon 5 Into Trouble In China

A number of musicians have been involved in controversial circumstances with China in recent weeks and the latest artist to come under scrutiny is none other than US pop princess, Taylor Swift.

The 25-year-old singer who is scheduled to make the trip over to China in November this year for her 1989 World Tour has launched a new clothing range in support of the shows.

As reported by ABC, hooded jumpers can be purchased by fans with the slogan ‘TS 1989’ printed on the front, obviously referring to the Grammy Award winning singer’s initials and date of birth, however to some in China it reads as ‘Tiananmen Square 1989’ in reference to the tragic event in which the Communist Party sent in troops to gun down thousands of protesters in Beijing.

It is suspected that tour organisers are hastily reworking the clothing art.

The news comes just days after fellow US act Maroon 5 cancelled two shows in China this September for what is believed to be regarding a post that the band sent out on Twitter.

The tweet from keyboardist Jesse Carmichael on 4 July read: “Happy Birthday America (and The Dalai Lama too) sang happy birthday to his holiness today,” which came under fire from the group’s Chinese fans as the country is known to have a contentious relationship with the Dalai Lama, who has been living in exile in India since 1959.

A week after the tweet was posted, Maroon 5 reportedly called off shows in Shanghai and Beijing, though the reason for the cancellation has not confirmed by the band.

While the US pop-rockers are heading Down Under this September, Swift will make the trip over in November for a slew of stadium performances.
