Taika Waititi-produced Comedy To Open Sydney Film Festival 2018

Kicking off with a bang.

The 2018 edition of the Sydney Film Festival will open with the Australian premiere of New Zealand comedy and SXSW standout, The Breaker Upperers.

Executive produced by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi (Thor, What We Do In The Shadows), the film follows two cynical misfits earning a living breaking up unhappy couples for cash, by faking deaths, impersonating cops and strippers, and feigning pregnancies.

The Breaker Upperers also stars James Rolleston (Boy) and Aussie comic Celia Pacquola making her feature film debut.

"The Breaker Upperers is awash with humour and heart, with a surrealist touch that makes the film really shine," SFF director, Nashen Moodley, said.

"It is permeated with the endearing politeness and offbeat charm that New Zealand comedies have become known for.

"The Festival would like to thank Lexus Australia for their ongoing support of SFF Opening Night, and is proud to open with the Australian Premiere of this hilarious film from these emerging New Zealand talents."

SFF opening night goes down on Wednesday 6 June at State Theatre and tickets are on sale now; for more details, click here.
