What did we consider to be the best of the best?
Results of the annual Street Press Australia Writers' Poll were released this morning, once again showing the world what writers for The Drum Media, Inpress, The Drum Media Perth, Time Off and this very website, theMusic.com.au, considered to be the best of the best in 2012.
West Australian psychedelic world-beaters Tame Impala can add another couple of awards to the substantial collection they have already amassed, with the band's Lonerism album voted as the best of the year and their song Elephant the year's finest song. As if that weren't enough, they also tied in the first position for the Artist Of The Year award, sharing that honour with indie-R&B young gun Frank Ocean with daylight between them and Grimes, who just made it onto the podium.
Ocean also fared nicely in the Best Album list, with his channel ORANGE debut taking out second position behind the Perth psych masters, while alt-J's An Awesome Wave, this year's Mercury Prize winner took third spot. Rounding out the top five were Grizzly Bear with Shields and Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city.

No huge surprise that Radiohead's triumphant return to Australia was considered the finest international live act, Sigur Ros may have missed out on album plaudits, but were our second favourite internationals in the live arena and Prince, The Pogues, Refused and Bon Iver were all close by.
On the local front, instrumental veterans The Dirty Three were our pick of Australian live bands thanks to their intense shows and Warren Ellis' incomparable banter, with young guns like Twerps, Tame Impala, Chet Faker, DZ Deathrays and Royal Headache
For the first time since 2009 Facebook has been knocked off the top of our writers' top websites of the year, with Twitter officially taking over as the preferred platform to talk shit and share links. This very site also fared very nicely, thank you very much, taking out the second spot while old favourites Facebook, SoundCloud, Wikipedia and YouTube round out the list of our favourite sites.
On TV we really liked Breaking Bad again this year, it left every other program in its dust to top the list for the second year running, with Game Of Thrones a long way behind in second spot. Girls scored third spot after just one season, while The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire and Homeland were also top TV priorities amongst our crew.
You can't really argue with Batman, we've found, The Dark Knight Rises giving Christopher Nolan another year at the top of our list. Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom was well loved, slotting into second spot, with Skyfall, Argo, The Avengers and Looper giving some idea of the kind of films we were paying most attention to in 2012.
Full poll results from all of our writers are currently available in Sydney's The Drum Media, while Brisbane and Melbourne can grab Time Off and Inpress tomorrow to scoff at our opinions and Perth's The Drum Media will have all results on Thursday. We'll also be rolling out the picks of our own writers as the week goes on.
