Splendour In The Grass organisers have responded to a campaign urging Australian festivals to ban controversial local van company Wicked Campers from events.
Yesterday, grassroots movement Collective Shout issued an open letter to four festivals, and Splendour has now responded via a statement to the ABC saying "sexist, disrespectful and offensive messaging has no place at our event”.
"If you’re planning your camping for Splendour, please do not book campervans that carry derogatory messaging," the statement reads.
"We don’t want to promote the brand, so we’re not going to mention them by name, but you know the company we’re referring to."
While pointing out that "Splendour is an inclusive community” and “have not banned any specific vehicle hire”, organisers also referred to the festival’s ticketing T&Cs, specifically a section that says they reserve “the right to remove any person in possession of or displaying… any item which is deemed racist, vilifying, sexist and/or offensive”.
Splendour In The Grass will return to North Byron Parklands from 19 - 21 July with headliners Chance The Rapper, Tame Impala and Childish Gambino and more in tow.
Rainbow Serpent, Woodford Folk Festival and Big Pineapple were also addressed in the open letter from Collective Shout.
The Music has contacted all festivals listed on Collective Shout's open letter for comment.
