Social Distortion singer and guitarist Mike Ness has revealed that he’s been diagnosed with Stage 1 tonsil cancer. As it was detected so early, he’s expected to make a full recovery after recent surgery, he told fans in a statement on social media nine hours ago.
Beginning the post with a reminder that life doesn’t always go to plan, Ness shared that he found out about the diagnosis while the band was in pre-production preparing for new music.
“I was feeling well enough to continue with recording in the studio up until the very day before surgery,” he wrote. “The band and I were so inspired and excited to lay down these tracks, which by the way sound f-ing AWESOME!”
Ness continued, “The recovery from surgery is a day-by-day process and in three weeks we start radiation and that should be the last therapy I need. The team of doctors are certain that once finished with this course, I will be able to start the healing and recovery process. We expect a full recovery enabling me to live a long and productive life.”
To assist in Ness’ recovery, Social Distortion have no choice but to postpone upcoming overseas tour dates and the upcoming new album.
“Time is required to heal,” he said, “I can’t thank our loyal fans enough who have been waiting so patiently for this. While it will take a little longer-I promise you that it will be delivered and it will exceed your expectations.”

Ness’ cancer diagnosis has given him a new perspective on the struggles millions face every day and told fans that “I know it’s one that many of you or your loved ones have personally endured, and my heart goes out to you-because I now know what it’s like from this heavy experience.
“I’m surrounded by love and support from my friends and family ESPECIALLY my lovely wife and incredible boys (oh and don’t forget my 3 dogs and kitty) THANK YOU ALL in advance to our unbelievable fans for YOUR love and support right now. We WILL get through this”.
Ness, and by extension, Social Distortion, have already received support from their peers, including their recent Australian tour co-headliners Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, Dave Hause, and more.
Social Distortion’s upcoming new album will be their first since 2011’s Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes.
During their show at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, Social Distortion gifted fans with two energetic new songs, Over You and Tonight. Kill Your Stereo remarked about their set:
“This was the first time that Social Distortion had played with Bad Religion in 40 years. Many bands would just accept that in this situation, they would be playing second fiddle to the masters, but Social Distortion delivered a set that befitted their status as punk rock icons.” You can check out our full review here.
