The Smashing PumpkinsSmashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has revealed that the band have reunited with producer Butch Vig for the first time in 32 years.
Butch Vig last worked with the Smashing Pumpkins on their 1993 album, Siamese Dream, which he co-produced with Corgan. Vig also worked with the band on their debut album, Gish.
“Billy and I raised the bar really high,” Vig said of the recording process of Siamese Dream in a 2017 interview.
He continued, “We wanted to make a very ambitious-sounding record. It was all done on analogue tape, so it was time-consuming. We were working 12 hours a day, six times a week for about three months, and for the last two months we worked seven days a week, 14 or 15 hours a day because we were behind schedule.”
Home to singles including Today, Disarm, and Cherub Rock, Siamese Dream debuted at #10 on the Billboard 200 and eventually achieved 4x Platinum status in the US. The album has sold over six million copies worldwide and made the Smashing Pumpkins one of the world’s most recognisable alternative rock bands.
Now, 32 years since they last collaborated, Corgan and Vig have once again joined forces as the Smashing Pumpkins work on new music.
The singer shared an image of the pair on social media, captioning the picture: “Back in the studio with Butch Vig for the first time in 32 years! James [Iha], Jimmy [Chamberlin], and I had an awesome time recording this new single, and if you want to hear more about it please check out my Substack.”

Corgan took to Substack on Tuesday (19 May) to share more information about the song, including that it’s already “98% done” and planned for release this year.
“We’ve just recorded one song,” Corgan said in the Substack livestream. “It’s for a specific purpose, which I can’t give that part out… I haven’t come up with a title yet, honestly.”
He added, “The plan is the song will be released this year. I can’t say exactly when. There’s reasons for that… The song is really cool. It’s basically done recording. I’d say there’s a couple little things left. I’d say it’s 98% done.”
The Smashing Pumpkins have released thirteen studio albums throughout their 38-year career, the most recent being Aghori Mhori Mei, which came out in August 2024.
Corgan expressed in a press release that, “In the writing of this new album, I became intrigued with the well-worn axiom, ‘You can’t go home again,’ which I have found personally to be true in form but thought, ‘Well, what if we tried anyway?’”
