Sick Of It All Vocalist Lou Koller Passes Away, Aged 59

Lou Koller, vocalist and co-founder of the New York hardcore band Sick Of It All, has passed away after two years of battling esophageal cancer. He was 59.

In June 2024, Koller revealed that he had cancer of the esophagus, which had spread to his stomach. Following the news of his diagnosis, the band cancelled a European tour as Koller underwent treatment.

The vocalist experienced intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, and was declared cancer-free in May 2025. However, it returned a few months later. The band hosted two benefit shows for Lou to assist with his cancer treatment.

Koller’s bandmates confirmed his passing on social media on Saturday (25 July, Australian time), where they paid tribute to their beloved bandmate.

“It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller,” the band wrote on Instagram.

Their statement continued, “The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming. This year would have marked Sick of it All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years.

“We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.

“At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund. You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now, and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”

Acts such as Metallica, Thursday, My Chemical Romance’s Frank Iero, Pennywise vocalist Jim Lindberg, Dropkick Murphys, wrestler CM Punk, Earth Crisis, Biohazard, and many others expressed sadness for Koller’s passing on social media.

Lou Koller and his brother, Pete, formed Sick Of It All when they were still in high school in 1986. The brothers are recognised as some of the most influential figures in New York City hardcore.
