The November ceremony celebrates some of the country's finest in cinematic composition
It's always the cast of a TV show, or stars of documentaries and movies, that get most of the credit and accolades when it comes to praise from the general public. It's fortunate, then, that the Screen Music Awards go such a long way towards ensuring recognition for the folks who make the whole thing sound so damn magnificent, today revealing their list of nominees for 2014's prestigious ceremony.
Leading the charge of composers up for awards are Antony Partos and Cezary Skubiszewski, whose music you're probably more familiar with than their names — the former has provided compositions for Animal Kingdom, The Rover, the Janet King series, the Jack Irish: Dead Point TV movie, Rake, Redfern Now and a bunch of other well-known titles, while Skubiszewski's work has included Red Dog, The Sapphires, Two Hands, The Wog Boy, Hating Alison Ashley and more.
The pair of virtuosos each have six nominations to their names, with nods falling across categories in television, soundtrack, miniseries, documentary and advertising. Partos has solo nominations as well as alongside collaborating composers David McCormack and Matteo Zingales; Skubiszewski is also up for awards alone and with his son, Jan.
Fellow composer David Hirschfelder also picked up multiple nominations, with two in the highly prized Feature Film Score Of The Year category (for Healing and The Railway Man), alongside Christopher de Groot's work on Sororal and Christopher Gordon for scoring Adoration, starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright.

Multiple nods also go to musical masterminds Basil Hogios, David McCormack, Adam Gock and Dinesh Wicks, Ricky Edwards and Neil Sutherland. In addition, Jack Moffitt (of The Preatures), guitarist Jeff Lang, Christopher de Groot, Edward Primrose, Jan Skubiszewski, Luke Howard and Alejandro Gomez Sanchez all make their inaugural appearances among the list of contenders.
The awards are a joint effort between APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC), and will this year be held on Wednesday, November 12, at Sydney's City Recital Hall. The ceremony, hosted by Rob Carlton, will feature orchestral performances of select nominated compositions, directed by Emmy-winning composer Ashley Irwin.
Shows represented among this year's nominees include Rake, Giggle And Hoot, Redfern Now, Wentworth, Fat Tony & Co., The Doctor Blake Mysteries, The Moodys, Serangoon Road and tele-movies The Killing Field and The Broken Shore. See the full list of nominees below.
