This Perth Artist Blew Up On 'The Voice' Last Night, But Here's Why You Should Already Know Him

WA musician Sam Perry's blind audition on last night's episode of The Voice Australia was billed as the series' most controversial and after winning over all four judges within 15 seconds of performing, it's clear the live-looping artist will be a stand-out this season. 

However, despite wowing mainstream audiences overnight, 28-year-old Perry is an artist who has been honing his craft (and nailing it) for some time now. 

Having scooped up awards at the 2016 and 2015 WA Fringe Festival, Perry first made waves in 2013 when he was scouted for live theatre stunt show, 360 Allstars - Urban Circus, which he toured with across the country for over 76 performances.

His breath-taking performances, as displayed on last night's The Voice Australia where he covered Prince's When Doves Cry, are usually part improvised and part rehearsed. 

Speaking to The Music in 2014, the Perth-born artist said "Live, I know the loops inside out and I know what I can do. Once you learn that I can throw down a C or a C#, I know immediately what note needs to come out of my mouth next for it to sound right.

"I know if I track something and it’s out of key, I’m in trouble. It can get pretty frustrating trying to do new things; that’s why I’ve got everything I know I’m good at in my back pocket."

Despite cases made by judges Boy George, Delta Goodrem and Joe Jonas, Perry chose to join Kelly Rowland's team who told him "You just changed the entire game".

The Voice Australia again pulled big numbers in the ratings last night too, posting a viewership of over 1.1 million.
