“I feel like this song encompasses so much of what I've learnt and reclaimed in the past few years, and feels very reflective musically of my true, silly, powerful self and community,” says Ruby Gill.

Naarm/Melbourne-based pianist, guitarist, and singer-songwriter Ruby Gill has returned with their first new piece of music in two years, unveiling Some Kind Of Control this morning.
Gill’s first new piece of music since the release of their Australian Music Prize-nominated debut album I'm gonna die with this frown on my face in September 2022, the latest single sees the musician entering a new chapter of their career with a newfound sense of self-acceptance and rawness in their music.
Speaking of the track, Gill explains that its inspiration came from an unexpected and wholly unique duality that arose throughout the Victorian lockdowns during COVID.
While wrestling with a lack of control over the circumstances, it also provided a sense of freedom and day-to-day power that hadn’t been felt previously. The result was a double-edged sword of opportunity and anxiety that was hard to grasp.
"I had been grappling with what it meant to have all and no control over my time and body – all at once,” Gill explains.

“In a big way, the world was in charge, but also in a day-to-day way, I had all the power: I could move freely through my kitchen and clothes and kindness however I wished – it was a new experience for me after feeling quite trapped in some difficult spaces and systems for a long time – ‘always babysitting other people’s arguments instead of my own’ as the lyrics say.
“I feel like this song encompasses so much of what I've learnt and reclaimed in the past few years, and feels very reflective musically of my true, silly, powerful self and community,” Gill adds.
Alongside the release of the new single, Gill is in the midst of a big mointh, having not only appeared on the latest episode of Spicks & Specks over the weekend, but also gearing up to embark on a brief tour of Melbourne and Sydney.
The two shows will see Gill performing at The Curtin on November 14th with Sui Zhen, and in Sydney at The Trocadero Room with US musician Mimi Gilbert. Tickets to these shows are on sale now.
