Red Hot Summer Tour ProfileToday’s Gold Coast leg of the Red Hot Summer tour has come to an abrupt halt after a temporary grandstand collapsed during a set from Boom Crash Opera around 2:50PM.
According to Seven news, at least three minor injuries have been reported, although thankfully none are believed to be serious. Early speculation on Reddit from patrons was that the grandstand had been built on sand, although the Gold Coast Bulletin reports that engineers had fully tested and assessed the structure on Saturday.
An announcement to patrons assured those in attendance that everyone seated in the grandstand would receive a full refund from the promoters. Multiple investigations into the incident have been launched including by the promoters, police and the Gold Coast City Council. Police remain at the scene as enquiries unfold.
The show continued around an hour after the incident after the area was cleared, with Vika & Linda, Eskimo Joe, Birds of Tokyo, Men at Work and Australian Crawl rounding out an amazing afternoon of music.
The event continues for five more shows, heading to Ballarat, Mornington, Swan Valley and Glenelg, heralding a successful run of reunions for both Men At Work and Australian Crawl. Three of the shows including today’s in Coolangatta are sold out with final tickets on sale in Ballarat and Glenelg.
Red Hot Summer is one of the country’s most trusted promoters with years of safe, sold out events. While the promoters have yet to release a statement about today’s incident, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin, an announcement at the event said “(We are going to) investigate why that just happened, I can guarantee you (that) will take place”.
“The people sitting in that grand stand, I hope everyone’s OK because, let me tell you, I was standing (in the) space right and I watched that happen and my heart just sank. I’ve got no words for the way I felt for those people who are going through that traumatic experience. Every single person who is in that grand stand will be fully refunded.”
