Randy Newman has today cancelled his upcoming tour of Australia due to "longer-than-expected recovery period from a recent operation".

The music legend was originally scheduled to kick off the run, his first of the country in ten years, later this month in Perth.

“I couldn’t be more sorry, I really couldn’t," Newman said in a statement.

"I wanted very much to perform in Australia and New Zealand.  I promise I’ll make it up to you.

"I am especially sorry not to be there in person to express my support for, and love of, Australia during this time of crisis.”

The news comes after Newman scored two Oscar nominations this week - Best Original Song for Toy Story 4 (I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away) and Best Original Score for Marriage Story.

The LA-born songwriter's Australian tour was scheduled to wrap on 7 February before the Oscars go ahead on 9 February.
