A police investigation has been launched at a popular Melbourne nightclub following the death of two teenagers, believed to be the result of drug overdoses.
As The Age reports, Regional Crime Inspector Kerin Moloney confirmed that Hawthorn venue Room 680 is under investigation by Victoria police and liquor licensing authorities.
Though the drugs consumed by the 17-year-old male and 19-year-old female last May have not been disclosed, a former staff member of the nightclub has claimed that the venue is "awash" in drugs, including ecstasy and GHB.
Emergency services were again called to Room 680 last weekend after several patrons required medical attention and it was reportedly shut down when two men and women were rushed to hospital after consuming drugs.
"Victoria Police is extremely concerned about the drug use and subsequent overdoses in the nightclub scene in Hawthorn and are liaising with venue operators to address the issue," Moloney said.
"Police have already increased patrols and visits to licensed venues in the area."
Room 680 owner David Christensen has denied any knowledge of illegal drugs being consumed in his venue.
"I've been in the industry a long time and I have a good record," Christensen said.
"I'm sure if the police had more information they would inform me."
