Pixies Perform New Songs With New Bass Player

As their new EP receives mixed reviews

More Pixies Pixies

A surprise Pixies gig in LA on Friday night was witnessed by a just a "few hundred" fans, according to LA Times.

It was the American band's first gig since announcing the departure of bass player Kim Deal in June.

LA Times' Randall Roberts praised new bass player Kim Shattuck (The Muffs, Pandoras) as a comfortable fit: "the blindfolded wouldn't have noticed the difference."

Pixies also aired the four tracks from their new release EP1 amidst a set that also plundered their back catalogue. However, the bass parts on the EP were played by Ding Arthur before Shattuck joined the band.

On the night, the band also debuted two more new tracks not on the EP: Blue Eyed Hexe and Greens And Blues. Footage of both tracks being performed at the show have been uploaded by a fan on YouTube.

Reviews for the new EP have been mixed. NME begrudingly admitted it was "pretty great" while Pitchfork called it a "minor tragedy".
