Perth Festival Unveils Huge 2020 Program

Perth Festival has today unveiled its huge 2020 program with more than 250 events heading to Western Australia.

Spanning theatre, music, dance, opera, film, visual arts and literature and ideas, the Festival will run from 7 February to 1 March next year and features some huge names including Mavis Staples, Neil Gaiman, Meow Meow, Rufus Wainwright, Kate Tempest, Bryony Kimmings, Paul Kelly, Garrick Ohlsson and Michael Keegan-Dolan.

Other highlights of the music program include Gordon Koang, Yeasayer, Weyes Blood, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Ngaiire and Aldous Harding

The festival will also feature 14 new Festival commissions that celebrate figures including Gurrumul, Philip Glass, Beethoven and Bon Scott.

Artistic Director, Iain Grandage, has also revealed this year's theme to be Karla – "a Noongar term meaning fire and by extension country and home".

“Perth Festival 2020 will be a huge, euphoric celebration of Perth, Western Australia – it’s my home town and I love it,” Grandage said in a statement.

“We introduce a sparkling new Festival hub, City of Lights including our new contemporary music venue Chevron Lighthouse, welcome the return of the much-loved Chamber Music Weekend and premiere exciting new works made especially for you by talented local artists working with artists from across the country and around the world.”

“Our Festival is a campfire for sharing stories and inviting belonging,” he continued. “In celebrating place, and the depth and range of Australian Indigenous culture, our entire first week is dedicated to First Nations performances.

“This is a first for any major Australian international arts festival and a celebration of Australia’s unique voice in the world.”
