Australian alt-rock storyteller Seb Szabo has shared the story of a legend named Jason who picked him up as he hitchhiked to Adelaide for a gig.

Earlier this month, Szabo was opening for Perth artist Jordy Maxwell on his national tour, which stopped at the Grace Emily in Adelaide last Saturday (23 August). The show went ahead with Szabo arriving just in time to take the stage. But it’s a surprise to see it went so smoothly!

Earlier this week, Szabo posted a video on Instagram captioned “here’s the story of how I ended up hitchhiking to a gig.” It was 5:48 pm, and he was stranded on the side of the road.

“I have a gig tonight in Adelaide. We drove six hours towards Adelaide, and we’ve broken down like an hour and a half out of Adelaide,” he explained. “Gig is in two hours, and we need to get there, so our only option is to try and hitchhike to the gig.

“So, we’re gonna try and do that! This was not on my bingo card for gig travel, but we’re gonna do our best. We’re gonna try and stick our thumb out by the side of the road and see if someone picks us up.”

Five minutes later, Jason pulled up, who’s described as a “hero” in the video.

On the road with Jason at 6:36 pm, Szabo introduced his hero to viewers: Jason is a truck driver, “likes Soundgarden and reckons Izak Rankine’s suspension was pretty fair.”

Szabo arrived at the Grace Emily, guitar in hand and ready to perform, at 7:46 pm. Ten minutes later, he enjoyed a “welcome beer” with Maxwell, and hit the stage and “played the fookin set” at about 8:30 pm. Of course, with such a great story, Szabo shared the tale of hitchhiking with Jason live on stage.
