If Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, Sour, soundtracked tough times in isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic with its May 2021 release, her new album, Guts, will likely feel like a real coming-of-age narrative following a turbulent time.
The driver’s licence singer will release her second album, Guts, on Friday, 8 September. A little over a two-month wait, Rodrigo won’t be leaving her fans hanging – this Friday, she’ll unveil the first single, Vampire.
Like Sour, Rodrigo has partnered once again with former lead vocalist and guitarist of the emo outfit, As Tall As Lions, Dan Nigro, who’s become an in-demand songwriter and producer.
Rodrigo has commented that she’s “so proud” of her new album and “can’t wait to share it with you all” on social media. In a statement, she said, “For me, this album is about growing pains and trying to figure out who I am at this point in my life,” per Rolling Stone.
Rodrigo added, “I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20—it was such an intense period of awkwardness and change. I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully, the album reflects that.”
Sour contained ballads and straightforward pop tunes, but the pop-punk songs really made her shine. The Music stated that Rodrigo's debut release was one of the albums that defined 2021.

In February, Rodrigo told Billboard that her follow-up album was in the works. "I have a title for my next album and a few songs,” she said. “It’s really exciting to think about the next world that’s coming up for me. I just love writing songs. I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself. [I want to] just sort of explore and have fun right now.”
A few months before, Rodrigo teased fans by announcing upcoming new music to listeners with the singer on their Spotify Wrapped.
"I just wanted to say thank you so much for listening to my music this year," she said in the video. "I really, truly couldn't be more grateful, and I am so excited for next year, and all of the new things and new music that 2023 will bring."
