NSW's coronavirus lockdown restrictions are expected to be lifted in 90 days.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said the state will look to remove the restrictions after no more than three months.

"There was a good question yesterday about when is the turn-off period for these health orders. It is 90 days," Fuller said at a press conference this morning.

"I certainly won't be seeking an extension and hopefully people will have gotten the message by then... "

Fuller's comments come after it was announced this morning that the number of COVID-19 cases in NSW has risen to 2,298.

Individuals can be hit with on the spot fines of $1,000 if found breaching distancing and isolation rules. The maximum penalty that can be handed out is an $11,000 fine and a six-month prison sentence.

The Government is encouraging people to self isolate as much as possible and to only leave the house for essential reasons, including work, shopping for food, exercise or to seek medical care.

Despite Fuller's comments, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said at a press conference this afternoon that Australians should expect that the changes put in place due to coronavirus will go on for "at least the next six months".

"We are one of the few, if only, countries that have been talking about the coronavirus pandemic as being one that we are going to have to live with for at least the next six months," he said.

"I have been very clear about that. For a very simple reason — I really want Australians to understand that we need to be in this for that haul."
