American artist Azealia Banks fired at Australia on numerous occasions last year, but over the weekend, she slammed the music industry for being behind on trends and criticised Australian culture.

Last year, Banks claimed that Australia is in a “vacuum of off-brand British culture” while describing Tame Impala as “cheesy” and calling Wolfmother “excellent” and “an American rock tribute band.” That commentary followed her axing of shows in Brisbane and Melbourne, in which she said, “This place makes me utterly miserable” and blasted Australia’s “WEAK ASS CURRENCY.”

Yesterday (20 October), Banks began a random rant on X (formerly Twitter) against the Australian music industry by mentioning Mallrat.

“Like it's no shade but if I can collab with fucking mallrat, I can definitely do a song with doechii and doja and just give the gworls what they REALLY want,” she began. “Lol nobody asked for a mallrat collab. All tea no shade.”

In a follow-up post, Banks wrote, “Whatever happened to mallrat? SIDEBAR: I really do pity Australian artists they are always like SO LATE to the global table. That death metal graphic design aesthic mallrat had was like 4 years played out by time she had it and it did not even match the sound of her music at all.”

In another post, Banks claimed that Australia does not possess an “A market” in the music industry and Brazil actually holds that title.

“Australia is really the edge of the fucking world and their music industry really is the B market territory industry execs try to say Brazil is. Brazil is DEFINITELY an A market,” she wrote.

“Just because consumers In Australia are white does not make it an A market. The AUD is in the trash can and they culturally are so far left behind and barely have any exports to compete in A markets and they few they do have usually need to move to the US or UK. i.e Kylie Minogue.”

Her posts continued after discussing the maligned remix of New Bottega. Comparing her new music to the New Bottega remix with Torren Foot, Banks wrote, “I REALLY fucked the aussie assholes over and will probably never perform new butthole ever again. Like new bottega is a piece of mid garbage compared to this new shit. I am ELATED.”

Adding that Australians possess “that inbred criminal gene for theft and oppression,” calling it “retardation,” Banks finished her piece:

“Now they're really gonna be fucking upset. A smart record label does whatever it needs to do to keep the artist happy and smiling because as they grow whatever pieces of work they have also grows and equals more $ for them.

“But Australian record companies are at SUCH cultural deficit the conduct business from a place of scarcity. So now they have 1 azealia banks record on their label and absolutely no opportunity of ever working with her ever again. And having the entire music community see how terribly they handled the project is a surefire way to ward off other artists/not be taken seriously by their investors. Poor sweat it out. That label will be defunct in 5 years.”

In response to Banks’ comments, Mallrat shared a screenshot of the posts and wrote, “I will never stop loving her!!” Sweat It Out and Torren Foot haven’t yet responded to Banks’ claims.

In 2015, Banks described her performance at Splendour In The Grass festival as a “waste of [her] fucking time” and previously called Australian audiences “terrible, violent and belligerent.”
