Not a bad nod of approval

As an up-and-coming drummer, being booked to perform at an NBA halftime show is a pretty big accomplishment, but for Newcastle punk metronome Kye Smith, it’s just the beginning of what’s shaping up to be a massive year, with the official Nirvana Facebook page sharing his latest video.

Smith, the drummer for NSW punk rock outfit Local Resident Failure, first drew global attention when he began posting punk drum covers a few years ago, which led to a chronology video series that not only won him the respect of his idols in NOFX, Lagwagon and more, but saw him take over on drum duties for Frenzal Rhomb for a few months while Gordy Forman was resting a broken arm.

Following on from a drum chronology of The Beatles – which Smith will perform at Madison Square Garden during halftime at a New York Knicks game later this year - his latest video covers Nirvana's entire discography from front to back in an epic five minutes.

“Nirvana paved the way for a lot of punk bands to be able to gain commercial success and become more accessible,” Smith said.
