The exhibition opens from today

More than 1200 works by the legendary David Hockney will fill the halls of the National Gallery Of Victoria (NGV) from today, in an exhibition set to run until March.

David Hockney: Current is a major solo exhibition for the celebrated British artist, whose decades-long career has yielded a stunning diversity of multimedia creations, from painted pieces to digital — even sometimes animated — drawings rendered using iPhones, iPads and other devices.

Alongside world-renowned works such as his immersive video work The Four Seasons, Woldgate Woods; his largest-ever painting, Bigger Trees Near Water; multi-screen video The Jugglers, and a dedicated, 60-metre-long gallery stocked with more than 80 of Hockney's recent portraiture efforts of subjects from his family and friendship circles, including famous faces such as John Baldessari and Barry Humphries.

The 79-year-old artist is creating a multitude of new pieces for the exhibition to complement his catalogue works, the entire, expansive retrospective thus providing a deeply comprehensive insight to the mind and talents of one of Britain's finest contemporary creatives — a fact not lost on NGV director Tony Elwood, nor Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley.

Said Elwood in a statement: "It is a privilege to collaborate with David Hockney, one of the world’s most celebrated and truly innovative artists, to develop this exhibition which features dynamic new works and highlights of his oeuvre from the past decade. His recent use of cutting-edge technology will provide an engaging experience for visitors and reveal the mastery and skill behind his ever-evolving practice."

"Presenting the work of the illustrious artist David Hockney is yet another coup for the NGV and presents an unprecedented opportunity for Victorians and all visitors to the state to experience the work of one of the world’s greatest living artists," Foley added. "It will no doubt be another must-see event on Victoria’s cultural calendar in 2016."

David Hockney: Current will run at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, until 13 March 2017.
