New Theatre Set To Boost 'Struggling' St Kilda Precinct

Alex Theatre to open in February

A new arts hub was launched today in the Melbourne beachside suburb of St Kilda.

The three-venue Alex Theatre was unveiled today in Fitzroy Street, on the former site of the George Cinemas.

Port Phillip councillor Serge Thomann welcomed the theatre as a key to revitalising a "struggling Fitzroy Street."

Set to open February 1, the theatre's General Manager Richard Fitzgerald today said the site's first production would be announced next week.

A guided tour through the site provide a glimpse of how the old cinema space would be transformed.

The tour revealed two theatres - one a 500-seater, the other a 330-seater, both still able to function as cinemas, plus a 'black box' studio/rehearsal space that can also be reconfigured into a 250-seat performance space.
