The great (charity) battle of our time
One of the greatest rivalries of our time will be decided this Sunday.
On the hallowed turf of Henson Park, in Sydney’s Marrickville, the musicians and industry of the Western Walers will go head-to-head with the community radio and media representatives of the Sydney Sailors in a high octane, high pressure, low tempo contest of Australia’s game – Australian Rules football.
The third edition of the Reclink Sydney Community Cup will be raising funds for Reclink, the fantastic organisation that helps disadvantaged communities round the country with its art and sports programs.
The Sydney Sailors have taken home the Cup on the first two occasions but, and if the training sessions are anything to go by, the Walers have put themselves through an arduous pre-season and bolstered their ranks considerably.

With it all to play for we can reveal that The Mess Hall’s Cec Condon and former AC/DC member Mark Evans are back in the ranks for the Walers, with Alicia Kish ready to lead from the front as co-captain. Urthboy – aka Tim Levinson – has been earmarked to make an early impact on the game, as has Fishing’s Russell Ritzgibbon, while Federal Member of Parliament Anthony Albanese and honourary squad member Jude Bolton (he of the Sydney Swans) can’t be overlooked as big game players.
Declan Byrne and Tim Higgins from FBi and 2SER respectively are back to lead the Sailors with former ABC radio host and current maths geek Adam Spencer prepped for inspirational half-time speeches. As well as the core list of community radio stars, Melanie Dinjaski on Fox Sports has been tipped by pundits to kick at least five goals while triple j’s is represented through breakfast hosts Alex Dyson and Matt Okine as well as Tom Tilley.
The Community Cup takes place this Sunday 17 August at Henson Park. Food and drink will be served, there’ll be an Auskick game before the main event and feel free to bring your own footy. Gates at 12 noon.
