Música's Label Arm Is A 'Joint Venture With A Big Label'

The boutique festival - which will expand this year - has teamed up with an unnamed label.

Boutique indie electronica festival Música has announced a label arm recently, which Your Daily SPA can reveal is a joint venture with an as-yet-unnamed label.

The festival took place in Sydney last year, bringing acts like SBTRKT and Ghostpoet to the country for the first time. Festival, and now label, owner Kane Bligh has told theMusic.com.au that the festival will be happening again this October and expanding to three venues.

"The festival is happening again, we're doing Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland this year, which is easier from a touring perspective," he said.

The label arm has come about as "A joint venture with quite a big record label, but we're not allowed to say who that is... We get distribution and a lot of marketing muscle, iTunes and stuff through them. But [Música] is still pretty much a boutique label."

The label will officially be launched this Saturday in Sydney, with performances by American Melo-X and UK's Star Slinger, who are likely to be two of the label's first releases.

Last year a number of acts, particularly SBTRKT and Ghostpoet, crossed over to critical and commercial success after they'd been booked for the festival, and Bligh hopes that similar bookings will put value into a label.

"The artists we brought out last year had never been out, but a lot of the artists we did bring out did great things," he said.

"When we bring them out, we want to have them signed to the label because it's easier for us. We're a small festival compared to the other guys, and it's easier for us to tour them on our events and sell them off... We're looking at some indie stuff, some electronic stuff, some hip-hop stuff... and some harder stuff as well. We're not going to sign a bunch of acts just to sign them, we're going to sign the right acts and build them right."
