Muse have always had a penchant for the dramatic.

The English rock band is known for its sweeping, theatrical arrangements, with guitars coming together with keyboards and synthesisers. They’ve made a song with an accompanying space Western music video. They perform for fans in arenas and stadiums, with lasers and pyrotechnics elevating the already-remarkable show.

Plus, they’ve previously expressed interest in outer space, exploring cosmic themes on albums such as Black Holes and Revelations and Simulation Theory, and they literally have songs called Space Dementia and Neutron Star Collision.

So, their method for announcing their forthcoming album isn’t exactly a shock to those who have followed the band over the years, but it’s still something you don’t expect to read every day.

Muse announced their upcoming tenth album, The WOW! Signal, by launching the news in space. Yep, you read that correctly.

Joining forces with the award-winning, marketing-focused space agency, Sent Into Space, the band transmitted a specially designed tablet 33 kilometres into the atmosphere to premiere the music video for their latest single, Be With You. Additionally, a second package held stickers to accompany a forthcoming limited-edition vinyl release to be claimed by their fans.

Like previous hits Resistance and Starlight, Be With You employs commanding organs and beats as Matt Bellamy’s vocals try to reach outer space. You can watch the music video below.

The WOW! Signal will be released on Friday, 26 June. You can pre-order/pre-save the album here.

The band’s forthcoming album is the follow-up to 2022’s Will Of The People, which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Album Chart upon its release.

An interstellar mystery inspires the title of Muse’s new album: in 1977, a 72-second radio burst originating in the constellation Sagittarius was detected, with a bandwidth and intensity that suggested a possible extraterrestrial source.

At the time, the astronomer who discovered the signal famously circled the sequence “6EQUJ5” and wrote “WOW!” on the printout beside it, giving the signal its name and inspiring Muse all these years later.

Muse last visited Australia in December 2017, coming Down Under for just two shows at arena venues in Melbourne and Sydney in support of their album, Drones. They were accompanied by special guests Nothing But Thieves.
